Some people say well before a year and others say after they're able to reason at 2.

my boy never used one and my daughter stopped wanting hers at 4 months when she found her thumb.

My girls had the binky until about 3 weeks before they turned 2. They adjusted fine at night (a week or so of minor whining), but quit napping....
My son never took a binky and nursed til 3.25 years old. ;)

My first son kept kicking it out at 3 months so he was done with it then. My second son wasn't using it much at 8 months so we just decided at the time it would be a good time to take it away. If you don't need to use it, don't. If you think your child can do without it, take it away. It will get to be more difficult as he or she gets older.

Depends on the child. My son was totally addicted to it. He had his until he was 3 yrs 8 months. But my daughter never took one.
