Baby Shower for Baby #3

Bridget - posted on 07/23/2009 ( 6 moms have responded )

What's your opinion on having a baby shower for Baby #3. My opinion is that it's not necessary to receive gifts for a 2nd or 3rd baby but I think each baby is a blessing & should be celebrated. I had a shower for Baby #2 & requested no gifts but still had some family members (mainly my in-laws) upset with me for having it. Now I'm pregnant with my 3rd & want to have a celebration for him? What's everyone's opinion? Am I overdoing it?

I see nothing wrong with a celebration for the new baby. I have 4 children and had a shower for all but the 4th ... In actuality, there is only 14 months difference between my 3rd and 4th so I didn't NEED anything... But in all of their baby books there is that spot for the baby shower stuff... I find I feel guilty that that's missing in my son's book.

I think you are being very reasonable about wanting to celebrate baby number 3 especially since you requested no gifts. If your in laws have a problem with it they don't have to come, however I still would invite them anyway :) Congrats!!

There's a difference between celebrating the new baby and having a shower. A celebration is something you and your husband can host to spend some time with family, etc to introduce the new arrival. If your family members can't figure out what "no gift, please" means, that's their problem. But don't call it a shower - a shower is about 'showering' mom and baby with gifts, and it is a big etiquette faux pas for the parents of the new baby to host their own shower . If you avoid the word 'shower', there shouldn't be any confusion. Congrats on your pregnancy!

We don't have baby showers in New Zealand or we didn't when I had mine it was thought of as bad luck to give baby gifts before the baby was born, but I think baby showers are a wonderful idea, why shouldn't you celebrate the birth of each new baby no matter if it your 1st or your 10th and as far as gifts go that is up to the giver of the gift. Isn't number 3 entitled to some new stuff too :) I was lucky my 3rd was a different sex so she had lots of new stuff because if she had been a boy she would have been prince of the hand-me-downs :)

If you specified no gifts then they are pretty dense. I have no problem showing up at a celebration for a child or 2nd or 3rd marriage - especially if gifts aren't needed.

You're not over doing it, have a party and enjoy yourself.

Just a thought - is someone on the in-laws side have problems getting pregnant? Back when I thought I couldn't have a child - I was hurt (irrational but thats how it goes) hated getting those invites.
