Big Kid Bed Transition

At what age is it appropriate to put your child into a big kid bed.? My son is 21 months and although he is not climbing out of his crib-yet, it seems a bit small for him now.

I would say when your son shows interest in sleeping in a big boy bed, and stays relatively still when asleep.  Some kids like the coziness and are reluctant to give up their cribs, while others are so fidgety when they sleep that the crib setup is the best for their safety.  My daughter climbed out in the middle of the night when she was less than 18 months, and we installed a crib "tent" that worked really well - we eventually moved her over shortly after her second birthday.

My little girl is almost 2 and she has been in a big girl bed for quite some time. With minor issues. She was very excited. We did a converting crib though so it's still basically the same bed she was in just no front railing. You just have to feel it out. She only gets out of bed about 2 times a night now and I just have to walk her back in and she is fine.

i found it helpful to go a head and get a big boy bed for my son and have it set up in his room. he liked to climb on it and lay in it for about a week until he got used to it and then he decided that he wanted the big bed instead of the crib. he was 18 months. i recently put my 15 month in a big bed as well and she likes it better since there is more room for her now. i did the same thing. i set up the bed in her room so she could see it and climb on it and lay down in it and she is the one that made the decision. i kept the crib in the room set up for a bout a month until i knew that they would not change their minds on the beds.

so it is up to you and your son.

Mine was climbing out at 19 months so we did not have a choice.  It has been difficult to keep him in bed ever since.  He is just now, at 22 months staying in bed all night.  As long as your son is happy in there, wait.  When he is around 2 he can actually become part of the process in picking out his new bed and sheets, etc.  I have read that that works well for them.  Good luck
