The key is tons of moisturizing and no heat styling or using rubber ties, scrunchies, etc.
This is a really good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner:

Here's what to do:
1 - Shampoo and condition baby's hair
2 - Lightly towels dry, don't twist too much (or at all)
3 - Using your fingers, brush the oil through baby's hair. Keep it light around the scalp (too much oil will make the hair dirty faster) and focus more on mid-length and the ends
4 - Starting from the ends, gently brush baby's hair, working up
5 - The best way to maintain is to do 1 or 2 braids and just tie the ends to hold the brain (to prevent breakage mid-shaft)
