breastfeeding and the pill

I'm currently breastfeeding my 6 month old and on the mini-pill. I'm about to switch to regular birth control pills because he's eating solids now and not nursing as often so the mini-pill isn't as effective anymore. I'm worried about the estrogen in the regular pills possibly drying up my supply. But I think as long as I keep nursing I should keep making milk, right? Has anyone else gone through this?

from what i understand the pill ( and even the mini pill can ) lower your supply drastically. Maybe stay on the mini pill and use a back up?

Quoting Brittney:

OMG i had the same issue, i dried up in 2 weeks after getting the shot! What i would recommend it getting on the "mini" pill, it is a progesterone only pill and is 80 % effective, you will have to use condoms/spermicides blah blah with it but it will work. Get off the shot and PUMP PUMP PUMP it will get better. Prayers your way

Actually someone suggested for her to get the shot b/c it didn't effect her supply.  She is currently on the mini pill and thinking of getting on regular birth control pill.  I don't know if what I took 7 years ago was considered the mini pill or what, but it did effect my milk supply too.  So, the point here is that all this stuff effects our bodies differently.  I guess if we don't want to talk any chances we should just buy stock in condom companies.  LOL

The pill lowered my supply with my first child and I pretty much had to stop nursing. That was 7 years ago and I know things have come a long way, but I decided not to take any pill while nursing from then on. I had my 2nd son and had a wonderful milk supply and only stopped nursing when my supply dwindled naturally. But I wasn't worried b/c he had been in the NICU for 6 weeks due to prematurity and I was able to freeze a whole (small) deep freezer worth of milk for him. So he had milk long after I was out. Next one is due in October and it will be our last child and I don't plan on taking anything for contraception until I'm done nursing. I want to be able to experience that for the last time as long as the baby and I decide.

I haven't gotten my period yet, but I've had some spotting since starting him on solids so that's why my doc switched my pills, she said my hormones were "reactivating" and I guess the hormones in the mini-pill aren't strong enough to suppress ovulation. And of course I completely forgot that she said to use a back up until I switch to the regular pills! :X

I asked my doc if I should switch pills when I switch to only nursing at night. He said the mini-pill will work just fine, as long as I take it around the same time every day. So, he recommended not switching to the regular pill yet.

I have not gone through this. I am on the Depo Provera shot, so I don't know. I do know that I have not lost milk supply on being on the shot and it is safe to breastfeed. My son is 5 1/2 months old and he is breastfeeding 4 times a day and gets 2 solid meals a day. I would suggest staying on something that does not have a lot of Estrogen in it. I don't think it is safe for the baby, but then again, if you have questions you should ask your Dr.
