Car seat safety

Melanie - posted on 01/22/2014 ( 4 moms have responded )

I have two girls. One is 22 months old and the other is a 5 month old. My 5 month old is getting close to growing out of her infant car seat and my 22 month old daughter is 3 pounds shy of being able to fit into a booster seat with the back on it. The car seat my 22 month old is a convertible one that my 5 month old can use but I'm wondering if it is safe for my 22 month old to move to the booster seat. Does anyone know the answer? I do know that some of the boosters say the child needs to be 3 but not all so I don't know if it just depends on what kind you get.

I meant 5 point harness.....I think it is the same as what I call a 3 point harness :)

Where I am children have to be in a 5 point harness until they are 4 and then it should be a booster seat with a back until they are 7.
22 months is far too young, you can get children's seats that do newborn to 4years, that would be better for your children (and safer).

I don't know where you live, but kids aren't allowed in boosters where I live until they are 4. Until then, they must be in a seat with a 3 point harness. You need to check the laws where you live.

Go by height/weight, rather than age. The height/weight guidelines are more accurate.

If in doubt, ask at your local firehouse. They will be able to help you remain in safe compliance with your needs.
