Circumcision: Yes or No?

Nicole - posted on 07/03/2012 ( 12 moms have responded )

I had my first son circumcised before really even researching it & now I'm starting to regret it.
I'm now pregnant with my second son & I'm thinking about not getting him circumcised.
What are your ladies thoughts?

Don't. It's an unnecessary cosmetic procedure that puts your son at risk for a whole list of complications (including death). Not worth it.

I didn't get my son done, even though my hubby was circumcised as a baby. My son is 4 and never had any issues with it.

If you regret having your first born done I would seriously think twice about circumcising your second son.

I didn't have either of my sons circumcised, there's really no reason for it. If you're regretting having your first done I wouldn't have the second one done. My oldest is 3 and despite loving to play in the dirt and play with himself, has never had in issue with it.

You have every right to change your mind. If either one ever asks about it, tell them why one is and one isn't. Both of my sisters circumcised their first sons but not any after that.

Do what you think is best and ignore what people say. We as parents will never make everyone happy with the decisions we've made for our children.

My son is not I found no medical evidence to suggest it was necessary. Although my husband and I discussed it and decided together.

We got our first son circumcised because my husband has his done while he was a toddler. While he was potty training the lid of the toilet seat fell, and crushed his little penis, and he had to get it done. As such, my husband has never had much experience with his foreskin, and we felt it better to stay consistent.

My husbands brother also needed to get circumcised while in his early 20's after getting an infection, and I have also known many people to have had incidents where it needed to be done later in childhood, and adolescence.

As it is, it worked out better for us. My son is now 4 and was recently diagnosed with Autism.
I feel that having the procedure helped clear any complication or stress it would have been to try to teach him to properly clean his penis as he gets older. (Not trying to use his Autism as a cop-out.. I am just pointing out that I feel it is a benefit).

We are now expecting our second son, and we will be getting him circumcised when the time comes...

If you are unsure how you feel you should do some research online outlining the pros and cons of the procedure. Unfortunately, on a forum like this one, you will find a great deal of opposing ideals on the procedure.

Is there a reason why you regret your decision to get your first done?
Just do what makes you comfortable, and if that mean your second child will not be circumcised then you have your answer.

i left the decision up to his dad since he has a penis. he didn't want out son to get circumsized so we didn't. there's no medical reason to do it at birth, it's for religious or cosmetic reasons and if either of those are important to you then get your son circumsized, otherwise just leave it be

That's a personal preference , My two son's aren't circumcised and I think it should be up to them when later in life if they do it or what.

I chose to not circumcise my son. When they are little, it is actually much easier to clean an uncircumcised penis (you just wipe what you can see, much like you clean their anus). And when they're older, it's really no big deal to remind them to do a good job washing their penis. Usually by the time a boy is old enough to bathe on his own, he'll probably be "cleaning" it nonstop!

I would leave it alone. Just remember to NEVER forcibly retract the foreskin. Leave it be, and he'll be just fine. If, when he's older, he wants to be circumcised, then at least that's a decision he's making for his OWN body.

It's a personal choice. We got our son circumcised because it's so much easier to clean especially when they get a little bit older you would have to constantly remind them to pull back the foreskin to clean the area. From the research I did when they get older if they are uncircumcised they have an increased chance of catching an STD. But again what ever you are comfortable's your decision. :)
