My 7 yr old has a cold sore that isn't healing very fast. What are some treatments we can try that are safe for children?

Check with her doctor as they may be able to prescribe or recommend a safe antiviral for her age. Those are miserable.

Second, make absolutely certain she doesn't have any contact with infants while one is active! Same goes for anyone in the family. Cover the cold sore if contact can't be avoided. Wash hands frequently, don't pick at them, and do NOT allow infant hands near them, ever. Cold sores can be systemic in infants and children (as Schyla describes) and fatal in very young children. People that have a cold sore are not even allowed on a maternity wing, or working in labor and delivery or a NICU at a hospital because the risk is so terribly high, and if you're employed in those areas they either change your shifts to other areas or send you home for the duration of them, each and every time.

my four year old gets them and with her exzemia they are the worst she gets them every where (yes this is confirmed by her doc) carmex or regular blistex neosporin is awesome too Tylenol for the pain and wait it out thats all you can do i suffer from them too and abreva did nothing but sting i say no difference in how long they lasted. there should be other options at your pharmacy

I have suffered from cold sores since I was young, abreva does pretty good ( check labor to see if you can use it on someone that age) I honestly think the best to do is leave it. Leave it to air and it will dry out with in a day or 2.

Are you sure it's a cold sore? I would talk to the pediatrician before doing anything.
