My daughter is almost 9 months old and has had cradle cap for a while now. She has lots of hair and we use Avano body wash. Any suggestions on how to get rid of it without breaking the wallet.

Use an anti-dandruff shampoo twice a week, making sure you keep it out of the baby's eyes, while the hair is lathered up use a soft brush to loosen the scales. If the scalp is very crusty use a little baby oil or olive oil on the scalp about an hour before shampooing, however, make sure you do shampoo the oil off or it will make the cradle cap worse. If the scalp is red and irritated you can apply 1% hydrocortisone cream three times a day for seven days. However, if the cradle cap lasts more than two weeks, starts to look infected or spreads beyond the scalp then you need to make an appointment to see your pediatrician.

I used baby oil also on my kids hair, waited a couple hours and combed it out with a fine tooth comb. It doesn't hurt them. In fact, the dry skin probably itches.

are you certain its actually cradle cap tho? and not scirious ( i spelt that wrong) ask the dr to check to see, because my daughter is 8 and she gets it on the top of her head and it runs in her dads family so i have to buy certain scirious shampoo that isnt that bad priced and you only use it when its needed, works like a breeze

Thanks everyone, will try the baby oil tomorrow. I have never heard that home reamedy. I have seen the cradle-cap shampoo at wal mart but did not know if it worked.

wal-mart sells a cradle-cap care product, i think it is called nature's care or something - it's in a mint green bottle with pooh and tigger...it worked for my daughter's cradle cap, although i've had to use it every 2 or 3 months b/c it keeps coming back...but you get so much compared to how much you have to use, one bottle will last you a long time!

Both my kids had cradle cap and its so easy to get rid of.
Baby oil onto the scalp in the bath dont be shy i use a good squirt so it really soaks the scalp, massage a little then leave for around ten minutes then get one of those fine nit combes and gently brush the hair forward, comes out easily everytime. I then shampoo the hair to get rid of the oilyness. Goodluck and i hope this works for you too..

I read on a website called whattoexpect.com and it says that cradle cap can be causes by not washing your babies hair enough or over washing it. And after I started to give my daughter bathes only three times a week her cradle cap has gone away. Hopefully that helps :)
