Did you have trouble potty training?

My son is 2 years and 9 months old and we are working on potty training. I feel as if this is the biggest advice-asker milestone in a child's life. I have read the blogs and am surrounded by three other moms of boys this age at my work, but wanted to hear from moms who have had late potty trainers. My son was peeing great in the potty at 2, but we slowed down to let him grasp the concept better. Now he runs around the house with his diaper off all day, sits on the potty for 10 minute intervals a few times a day, but always pees once we put a diaper on him before naptime or bedtime. Is this something he will eventually adjust to if we keep diapers off of him during the day and continue to be patient? I know he is still young and has time, so we have never been pushy or frustrated with him. Every child develops at a different age, so this is more of a support question. It just seems like all the moms around me are past this point and I feel discouraged.

I let my son self-train in a way. I would take him into the bathroom when we went. He had a potty there we would encourage him to sit on, we'd ask him. We started doing this around age 2 or so. We also never pressured him, he just eventually did it when he was ready. Once he started going, we had incentives to encourage him to continue it, and that worked great (we bought toy cars he got when he went, then only for poops, then only once a week, then not at all). I think we did the incentives for about 2 months total. I'll likely do the same when my daughter trains (but maybe with some girly toys). He has been day time trained since he was 3y 2m and is still not nighttime trained yet (he'll be 4 in Sept). He'll get there when he's ready, he's just not yet.
