Does anyone else give their children Benadryl for a cough?

My daughter has had several bad viruses over the past 3 months, and they have all ended with a terrible cough that has gone on for weeks. The doctors don't want to give her antibiotics, but the cough is keeping her up at night. A friend of mine said her doctor recommended Benadryl for the nighttime cough. Has anyone else tried that, and if so, how did it work?

The doctor won't give her antibiotics because they don't work on viruses. They're generally only effective against bacterial infections. You don't want her developing a resistance to antibiotics, so it's good that he won't give them to her.

Benadryl works well, my brother took it all the time when we were kids, but I thought it was for allergies? I like Buckley's Jack and Jill, after my daughter takes it, her cough is gone all through the night. Benelyn is good too. Like Iysha said, try to only give it to her at night so she can sleep. She'll breathe easier and pass the virus sooner if she can cough the mucous up.

Benadryl can be reccomended for a cough...the ingredients in it are good for allergies, sleeplesness, motion sickness, cough, runny nose, sneezing, itchy/watery eyes, and other respiratory allergies.

Also try vicks vapor rub at night for easier breathing if congestion in the nose/chest is an issue.

Hope your little girl gets well soon =]

P.S. benedryl and other medicines for coughing are to relieve actually is a good thing for her to cough to get the mucus out of her's the body's way of getting rid of it, so it may be a good idea to use the benedryl at night only and use the rub during the day and at night.
