Does anyone else have a 3 year old that repeats themselves over and over again?

My son is 3 now but he's been repeating himself since he first began to speak. He'll be come fixated on an object or a sentence and say it over and over again. His pediatrician says it's nothing to worry about, but I do! I can't help it! Am I alone with this problem? Any useful hints to make his stop? It scares me, and quite frankly it can be really annoying sometimes.

It's hard to know, because children this age often repeat themselves, so it depends HOW this is happening. However, it does remind me of the behaviour of a friend of mine's son and he was diagnosed with Aspergers. He also displayed this behaviour even after you responded to him with an answer each time, and he would keep asking the EXACT same question, almost like he was stuck in a loop. But this was NOT the only behaviour he displayed that was consistent with this diagnosis, so whatever you do, don't jump to conclusions. It could be perfectly normal for your child. Just ask your doctor on your next visit.

My 3 year old does the exact same thing and I do not believe at all that he may have autism or any other disability like it. I would listen to your doctor.

I'm sorry to have to say this, but you may want a referral to a Developmental Neurologist. The specific terms that go with these behaviors are Echolalia - repeating of words, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - repeating a specific habit over and over. They are very common in Pervasive Developmental Delays and Autism, and it takes some significant work with Speech and Occupational Therapy to overcome them. This does not mean he has ASD at all! It's one sign of it that is concerning though and requires further evaluation.
