Does anyone use Domperidone to promote lactation?

My baby is 4 1/2 months old and my milk supply is ok, but not quite enough. A lactation consultant recommeded I try taking Domperidone to increase the prolactin levels and I have just started it. Since it's not FDA approved the pharmacist could not tell me much about it. What I want to know is ....what are the side effects anyone has experienced and how long will it take to notice an increase in my supply? How much will my supply increase (in general)?

I took it aftermy fourth child to help my milk production, without success. Apparently my boobs just don't work LOL. (I never nursed any of my children successfully)
The only side effect I had was TERRIBLE gas...the most horrid smelling thing ever, but not painful. And the odour was passed on to my dughter's digestive system, causing her to have horrendous gas (also seemingly wthout pain) and beyond-stinky bowel movements. It was so bad it was embarrassing.

I agree with Carol, unless you are in true need of medication, there are better ways to boost your milk supply.

Good luck!

Oh one thing you need to note is that this drug does not take effect immediately, it can take 72hrs to 3 weeks to see full effect, it dose not work over night. It is also not a one pill a day dose when you take the does correctly to boost milk supply. You will need much more than two doses to see a difference, the starting dose is usually 30mg three times a day, up to 40mg 4 times a day

Go to and search doperidone for some really good info or follow this link if it wo

I had two doses and unfortunately it did nothing for me. I was lucky to express 50 mils at each feed, on a good day 100. My poor baby was starving, i tried everything and I just couldn't get a good milk supply.

I used reglan, and domperidone, I think I had better results with the reglan. I had to get the doperidone from outside the US which I paid about $130 for 250 pills, but they still prescribe it in Canada ect.

I had great results when I started taking fenugreek capsules, but I was taking about 10 a day & they make you smell like maple syrup.

Either of the drugs is not all that expensive if you have health insurance, but the reglan is easier to get in the US.

I went from producing 21oz a day to 64oz for my twin boys. It took three weeks, and I slowly upped my dosage, starting at 40mg a day (10mg 4x a day) to 80mg a day. I haven't noticed any side effects. Good luck!

I started Domperidone 3 days ago (20mg x3's a day). I've went from maybe 1 ounce a day after pumping every 4 hours, to now having 1 ounce every pump. And this morning I got 80ml...yep, it's working .

My LO stopped nursing at 3mths due to her growth spurt. So now, for 1 1/2months I've been EP (exclusively pumping) and supplementing with formula. Tried the herbs, but my body tapered off when it got used to them, fenugreek, mothers I'm VERY excited with these results, and hoping it gets even better.

I used domperidone to increase and maintain my milk supply as I was nursing after breast surgery. It worked wonders for me and I took it for 19 months. I was able to wean my daughter off of formula and exclusively breastfeed after 4 months. I did not have any negative side effects from it either. I would not hesitate to use it again if necessary.

But I would say that if I had not needed to take it in order to have a sufficient supply, I would not choose to take any medication just to pump extra or something like that. I think that taking any medication does have risks, even if they are low, it is not worth taking the chance if not absolutely necessary.

Sorry, haven't taken this but wanted to say I had absolutely zero results from fenugreek. Wow what a waste of (a large amount of) money....

I didn't have any luck using Domperidone to significantly increase my milk production. Before and after the medication I only ever produced 20-30ml per breast at one time, which meant I had to supplement with formula as well.

What I did experience were severe headaches which in the recent aftermath of birth, I didn't immediately connect to the medication.

Prior to the prescription, I also tried the herbal medications Blessed Thistle and Fenugreek. Neither of these produced an increase either.

Not to be discouraging, it may work much better for you. I stayed on each course of medication for more than a month. But please note the headache issue, no new mum needs additional physical stressors. If it happens to you, you'll know that the medication is a likely source.

Best of luck!
