Does your 5.5 month old coo and babble?

Hi everyone,

I am worried that my 5.5 month old son doesn't coo or babble. I know that maybe it is too early to expect him to babble, but I do think by now he should be cooing. He smiles a lot, laughs out loud, and has good eye contact. He also groans, whines, whimpers, grunts, and coughs. But no "ooooh" or "ahhhh" noises. I am worried that this may be an early sign of autism.

So, my question is: Has anyone else experienced very late cooing and babbling and what was the outcome? Delayed speech, just fine, autism, etc.

Thanks for your time!

if you are very concerned then talk to your doctor about it, My daughter has no developmental delays, no autism etc, she is now 20 months. Truthfully I can not remember if she did or did not coo, I know that it did take a while for her to mimic us as I was concerned about that. I would say that this probably is not something to be worried about, babies do develop at their own pace and it sounds as if he has reached all his other milestones.

However, if you feel that something is just not right, follow up with your doctor.

Boys are usually not as vocal as girls. Many boys don't start talking until much later. If you're really concerned talked to his pediatrician at his 6 month checkup.
