mommy or by your name? My almost 3 year old started calling me by my name last week, should I correct him or just let him call me by my name. What would you do?

you can gently say momy and smile or let it go...the choice is yours....they all do it...the only thing not to do is punish or get angry..everyone else call syou by your name...and your child is getting smarter and mimicking others...

A lot of kids go through that phase. I wouldn't make a huge deal out of it -- he's not misbehaving, so it's not worth scolding him over. Or, if you correct him every time, he'll think it's a fun game and will do it even longer. Just keep referring to yourself as Mommy when you talk to him, ("Give Mommy the truck" "No, you have to hold Mommy's hand when we walk"), and he'll get back to that soon enough. It's definitely not worth getting wound up about.

I went through that phase with my dad, where I called him Marc all the time. (Fortunately, that was his actual name, or there might have been questions...)

The phase was short-lived, and I call my folks Mom and Dad. I only ever refer to Mom by her first name if we're in a very crowded situation and I'm trying to get her attention (because saying, "Mom" would cause every mother in there to turn around.)

My 2 year old calls me mommy or sweetie, he hears my husband call me sweetie all the time.

It's usually mommy, daddy, mom, or dad....but if it's our names we don't make a big deal out of it.

Around 3, Christian learned about rhyming. And Chad rhymes with dad. Our son called him Chad the dad for the longest time. It was pretty adorable.

He also loves to introduce us to people as Amber and Chad. We find it cute.

If you want him to call you Mommy, then just tell him that if he calls you by your name you won't hear him. Then ignore him until he calls you Mommy.

Well my daughter is almost 3 and she just calls me Mommy but if she was calling me by my name I would correct her but if she didn't stop calling me that I would just leave it alone until she gets older and learns to call me mom!

my daughter went though a stage of call my husband and I by our names, we just thought it was funny, it even got to the point where she would call my in-laws by there first names, but she got over it. My son on the other hand is 2 and a bit and he has always called me mummy, however dad has always been Mick. I don't think i have ever heard him say dad!

Sometimes if I take too long to answer it turns into the whole 'Family Guy' skit where Lois (the mother) is sitting on her bed I think and Stewie comes in the room and starts calling her, but she doesn't answer so it turns into:

Mommy, Mommy, Mommy, Ma, Ma Ma Ma, Mum, Mum, Mum, Mum and then finally i'm like "WHAT!!!!" LOL

That's up to you to decide. I have my kids call me mom. They do know my name, and I think that's very important in case they get lost. I'm just old fashioned and think it's a respect thing. I never called my mother by her first name until I was working with her at 17 years old. And it was mostly for professional reasons. Both kids call me mommy and call my husband dad or daddy. They both know both our names. I have a 2 and 4 year old. My son does think it's funny to call daddy "aaron" but aaron just laughs and goes 'just call me dad' and we don't make a big deal out of it.

I have a SD who calls me by my first name. So it's only natural for my son to occasionally call me by my first name as well. Sometimes my SD and my son call their dad 'Pete' because they hear me calling him by his name. I don't think it's a big deal. He probably just heard your SO or others call you that and thinks it's fun to call you by a different name. I don't see the big deal, personally but it's up to you if you really feel uncomfortable about it. It's probably just a phase.

I'm called: Mama, Ma!, Mum, Mom, Mommy, 'other' mommy, Jenn, Ben's Mom. Morgan's Mom.

First I'd probably laugh (actually I did laugh) then tell her "Nope, I'm mommy to you, thanks." In their 20s I'm still Mommy ;)

It helps that their father calls me "Momma" when referring to me to them.

My youngest calls us either mummy and daddy or by our names. You can't blame the poor kid really. She has one older brother (my son) who calls her daddy by his name, she has an older brother and older sister (my husband's two kids) who call her mummy by her name......I prefer her to call me mummy, but I certainly don't bother if she calls me by my name either. She's 6, and calls us mummy and daddy more often than not these days, but when she was younger it must have been very confusing for her. And I couldn't REALLY correct her because the others were calling us by first name.....

My 13 year old has outgrown *mummy*. He calls me Mum (or mother when he is being a smart ass).

My kids call me mummy. They never get confused because my husband and i have this habit of calling each other mummy and daddy LOL

You should definitely correct your son, your his mother but it depends on what you prefer if you don't mind then it's up to you :)

Correct him definitely. You are his mother, and he should call you as such. It is never ok in my book even if he's 30 years old. You are never anything but.

mummy and mama. They do call hubby daddy but sometimes our 4 YO will call him Shane, especially if she's heard me calling him that.

I work in a school and I askes a child what his Mom's name was. He replied, "Mommy." He really didn't know her name! I think it is fine for him to do this and it is your name! He will go back to calling you me!

Jacob calls us Mommy & Daddy. Sometimes, if my husband calls me by my first name, our son will turn around and call me Joy also. I just ignore it. I prefer Mommy. What's cute is that most of the time my husband and I call each other "Babe" and I LOVE it when Jacob comes to me and says, "Babe, may I have some apple juice?" or whatever it is he's asking for lol It FLOORS me and melts me all at the same time. ♥

My boys are 2.5 and 4.5 and they both call me mommy. A lot of parents feel it is a respect thing to be called mommy or daddy rather than their actual name, but it is what you are most comfortable with.

A lot of kids go through a phase of wanting to call you by your first name instead of mom. My daughter was 4 when she did that, it lasted a few weeks and that was it. She was 3 before she even started calling me Mommy, I didn't have a name before that and I got pretty attached to it, so instead of correcting her, I just had her father call me Mom instead of Jo in her presence.

My kids call me Mommy or Mom. It's fairly normal for a young kid to call you by the name he/she hears other people calling you, but I would correct him.

The little girl i babysit (she's 2) calls her mom by name anytime we drive by her apartment while out and about she will say "That's my Abby's house" i usually tell her that is your MOMMY's house, my 4 yr old has taken over correcting her. She will say "Abby is your Mommy, say That is my mommy's house" after we remind her a few times it usually sticks but then after being around her dad or his family she will come home calling her Abby again... Just keep reminding him that you are mommy, Good Luck
