Since babies usually do say Mama at first versus Mommy, I don't think your request to have her called something else is out of line. But you might be making a bigger deal out of it than it's worth. As the child gets older, when he hears everyone else calling her Mama he might start calling her Mama, too. He may feel like the odd-ball if he calls her something different than everyone else. It depends on how much the family is together for him to hear others using that name. And it's not like it's a lie... she is a Mama, just not your son's Mama.

My grandmother wanted to be called Mamaw, so her mother (my great-grandmother, who was called Mamaw by some of her grandkids and great-grandkids) we always called Grandmother. We lived in a different state, and weren't around very often to get used to hearing others call her something else, so it was easier for us to keep calling her Grandmother.

We also had a baby sitter we called Momma Jo, and an old man down the street that we called Grandpa. Those people weren't related, but those names were what everyone called them, so that's what we called them too. It was a term of endearment, a term of respect, and was not meant to be offensive to, or replace, any of our family.

What's their name for Nanna in Spanish?
Talks it through with the family and see what they would like to be called other than "Mama".
