Is there a way to prevent an ear infection? My son has had a total of 3 in his 2 years of life, they don't seem to bother him too much but would like to know if any mom's out there have any home remedies for preventing them or getting rid of them. thanks.

does he take a bottle or cup to bed? laying flat on the back while drinking can cause the fluid to run back, and thats what causes ear infections, just like when your sick, and the mucus and all that gets trapped up there. most kids do get ear infections when they have a cold, if it seems he gets them about the same time he is sick, that could be why.

This may sound gross but Urine Therapy works wonders....my family does tons of home remedies before taking any prescribed or OTC drugs. My son was 3 at the time and when we lived in Ohio we were snowed in with no way to the ER, so my Aunt suggested to use his own urine. Catch it in a cup as he stands to pee in his potty use a dropper & put like 2-3 drops in his ear. I promise you his hollering stop instantly and he slept like a new born baby the rest of the night. IT WORKED, I still can't believe it and with my second son 6 yrs later I did the same on him. Sssshhh don't tell them though, I could just imagine my son going to Pre-K saying "my mom put pee in my ear"...LOL As he got older I learned to say that the doctor needs a sample so pee in a cup.

Elevate the head in the crib just a little. by putting a small board under the matress. It helps with drainage

Quoting Alecia:

I had the same problem when my youngest child was age 2. She caught them all the time from kids at school. I was so tired of the antibiotics and fever medicine! I was told to try 'Astragulus Extract", which is an herbal supplement for kids for immune support. It comes in liquid with a dropper, I got it from an Herb shop not GNC, get it from an Herb shop. I started giving her 1 dropperful every day or twice a day and I haven't had a problem since. Boosting the immune system, she barely gets a cold..Try it and good luck.

thank you so much....i just hate giving him antibiotics and fever reducers , am looking for a way to do it herbally. so thanks again, i will try this!

thanks to the other moms too, i appreciate the time you gave looking and giving your advice!

there is a muscle at the back of the side of your mouth (inside) that helps drain the eustachian tubes. You can massage it pretty easily. My mom did this for me when I was younger and got a lot and I've not had a single infection since.
put your finger on the roof of the mouth then follow it back until you hit the soft part. Sweep your finger down applying gentle pressure from the top to the bottom. This will help clear any fluid and will also help them keep draining properly. You may want to practice on yourself a few times to get the hang of it before trying it on your baby. Make sure you don't have sharp fingernails, too!

Check your local health food store for ear candles &/or get your child to a chiropractor for an adjustment. Yes it works!

Chiropractics! Seriously, everyone I've talked to that has tried going to the general dr and a chiropractor said that they would stick to the chiropractor on this one. Our son has had one ear infection that we were aware of, he had an adjustment then the next day it was like nothing was wrong! (However we think it was the end, so it may have just helped it finish up quickly).
