Whose ear? Yours or your child's? And has this only just started? Is there also a little puss?
Quite honestly, it could be any number of things, you haven't given us much to go by. Whatever it is, though, you should get medical attention, as if it is not already infected, it could be open to getting one inside the ear. It is a potential burst eardrum, which should be treated with antibiotics.
