Eye drop madness

My nearly 5 year old son has to get eye drops (3 times a day) for about a week for conjunctivitis... any suggestions on this? We have a few attempts in, but of course he dreads it and pinches his eyes closed so tight that in spite of my best efforts, I'm not so sure enough medicine is getting in. He's so worked up about it he can't hold his eye open or blink when I ask him to, to try to work the medicine in...he cries and has a dramatic fit about it, before and after. I do give him M&M's afterwards, which is probably the only reason he sits for me at all to even try it! Any other good suggestions? Will only a teeny amount of medicine help anyway??? I have explained the purpose of the medicine and why its important to do it...and he gets that, but his fear of it runs so high its hard for him to just calmly go with it. Its sooo frustrating! Its going to be a loooooong week.

Squirt the drops on the side of his nose so they run into the corner of the eye. I've found this is less traumatic for kids than watching that big dropper coming straight for their eyeball. The doctor always told me if 1-2 drops got in, we were in pretty good shape.

Thanks ladies! We are on day 5 of the drops now, and its been a funny week. I definitely do what's been mentioned...drop it near the corner while his eyes are pinched shut and then he blinks like crazy to work it in. But found a way to make the tears and drama go away...up the number of m&m's! Gave him four for just letting me doing it in the beginning...then he wanted more. I told him, if he wants more, then he has to do it without fighting me and carrying on. Then miraculously, he did it cheerfully (and even called them tickle drops) for 7 m&m's! (I use the mini ones, so its really insignificant..but apparently not to him!) And tonight, he decided he didn't even want the m&m's...and still cooperated just fine. Sigh. His other eye got red this week, so we'll be continuing on with the tickle drops a few more days. Thanks for the words of support!

I agree with Gwen , when my kids needed them I let them close their eyes and then squirted them into the corner, then had them open and blink a few times. Gets plenty in and doesn't scare them :)
