Flying with a one year old.

Christmas we are spending with my in-laws this year, as we do every few years. They pay for the airfare for us, which is great. This year my father-in-law told me that he is not going to buy a ticket for my one daughter who will be 15 months at the time of travel.

While I understand it saves him the price of a ticket, it feels a bit unsafe to me. Last time we flew there he had no problem paying for a seat for my other daughter who was 13 months at the time.

I was thinking of using carrier for her, you know the ones like a front facing backpack. It might actually be easier on me in the long run rather than having 2 carseats getting on a plane. There will be 7 of us traveling and it's always hectic anyways. The flight is short anyways, we're in the air maybe an hour.

Who has traveled with a lap baby before? What experiences did you have? Would you do it again?

Thanks for your insight Sarah. That makes me feel much better. I looked online and it's stories of babies being tossed to the front of the plane and all this craziness and I was thinking it can't be that bad if they still allow babies on laps.

Yes I knew stroller and car seats go on free and don't count against baggage. Would be kinda hard otherwise not to have a carseat after we land :) the stroller for me is a must Since it's a 6am flight on Christmas Eve. 2 tired babies without a place to sit/nap would be my worst nightmare. I am assuming both will sleep soon after we taxi anyways and sleep the whole flight.

I read somewhere to bring the car seat anyways in case there is an open seat. I don't know how often that would happen. worth a shot though right?

The truth is the baby will end up strapped to hubby for a few reason. #1 been diagnosed with arthritis in my back. #2 the 3 year old will be upset if she isn't sitting next to mommy. #3 me having both babies is a little unreasonable.

I have traveled many times with my kids on my lap. For me it works well. I know safety wise if you were to be in a crash it can be dangerous as the child then is not strapped in. But to pay the price of another ticket is crazy to me. My youngest we flew when she was 15 months and then again when she was 18 months. Both times she was on my lap. I did not need many toys or extras for her as she stayed busy looking out the window or playing with her siblings. She also enjoyed standing on my legs and looking around. If I could I would do the lap child again....she is now too old to be a lap child. I am sure you know this already, but just in case.....your carseat and stroller flies free no matter if you pay for a ticket for her or not. Just carseat would go below the plane if not a paying seat.
