My 5 year old son wants green hair which I think is fun. He has light brown hair and we tried manic panic on it and it just tinted it green. Needless to say he was not happy. Is there any safe bleach I can use to lighten his hair first before trying green again?

at 5 he is way too young for those kinds of chemicals. I'm a cosmetologist, and you can actually lose your child for doing that. they concitered that child abuse because you are subjecting your child directly to caustic chemicals. if you want a safe alternative, use colored hair spray. there's some carried at sally's and they wash out. no worse than using any other "product" like hair spray, and they can't take your child away from you for it.

okay, she didnt ask if you thought it was a good/ bad idea to dye her childs hair, she obviously already has made a choice about it. She asked if theres something she can safely lighten his hair with
u can try lemon juice in a spray bottle & let him play in the sun all day, that will lighten it. That wont lighten it to an extreme tho. kool-Aid only works with light hair. (i dye my white dog w/ Kool-Aid!) Hot Topic has alot of hair color stuff or Sally's beauty salon

I used to be a hairstylist as well...and I bleached a 13 year old once and his entire scalp turned into one large blister...I just wouldn't take the chance with a 5 year old. You can go to a hairdresser though and ask if they know how to do "shoeshine" highlights...it's when you put the bleach on a foil, then "brush" the bleach onto the ends of the hair. You get the effect of full head bleach, but still have natural roots cause the bleach doesn't touch skin.

i think that the people on this might want to read what they wrote and read the question again. for one he is not unhappy that he wants it gone, he wants it greener! it asks if there is bleach safe enough to lighten the hair.
if you need to lighten the hair more you could try a blond hair dye. they generally dont contain bleach, and depending on how dark his hair is it will lighten it anywhere from a shade or two through several shades. you might have to wait a couple weeks and try it again though. the only thing that would actually lighten it enough in one use would be bleach, which everyone already decided was bad.

Dying your hair is fun and shows a lot of personality! That's wonderful that your boy is so creative. My oldest, now 14, wanted her hair hot pink when she was 6. We tried without bleach and it didn't take. So I bought the softened bleach that isn't supposed to burn. It does anyway! She complained about the itch and tingle, but when it was done and her hair was the right color, she was glad she dealt with it. Bleach is a very harsh chemical, and anyone reguardless of age can have an adverse reaction to it. Is your son chemically sensitive in other ways? If so, bleach is probably a bad idea. But if you get the kind of bleach that you can put on the scalp and do a skin test to make sure it doesn't blister him, you should be able to do it safely. As with any harsh chemical, only use it in open air, maybe on the back porch or a room with all the windows open and a fan running. As long as your son is mature enough to handle the itch and tingle and you take proper precautions, I don't see why he can't have what he wants. And btw, manic panic sucks as a hair dye, try Fudge, if you can find it.
