Help! Delayed 7 year old & temper tantrums! 😒

I have a 7 yr old daughter who was diagnosed as delayed so she's mentally like 5-51/2. She was on intunive for 6 days & began having negative thoughts so I immediately took her off this medicine and called her pediatrician. She's now been off of them meds for 2 weeks, I was never a mom to even consider putting my child on medication to help until I saw how my child is suffering mentally through every day tasks. Everything is a battle! She don't want to wake for school, she don't want to eat or get on bus, the min she's off the bus temper tantrums start. I've tried to hold her & tell her it's ok to cry and be sad just tell mommy what is wrong maybe I can help. I've tried to leave her alone so she can calm on her but that don't work. I'm a single mom of one and I would truly love some non negative advice. Thank you!

My son does not have mental delays, but he does have anxiety and depression... and the tantrums when he was 5 (since you say that's about where she is at) were wicked. The best thing I did for him (and our whole family) was put him in some counseling when he was 6. It only took 6 months, but w/ the counseling, strict consequences for his aggressive behaviors, and some more time/maturity... things got a LOT better.

If she is not receiving services through the school for the delay and not in counseling... those would be the two places I would start. A good counselor will not only be beneficial to her, but also a good sounding board and support system for you.

Does she get services in school? Is she completely off all meds now? do you think that expectations for her are set too high? As she is 7, but more like 5, do people expect her act 7? Is she in a mixed grade class? Kids like this will do best with a very strict routine, so they can predict what comes next and can prepare for the shift in activity. Is she over tired?
