Help with 3 year olds persistent cough

My son has had a persistent cough for about 3 weeks now.
It started as a usual cough/cold so I treated it myself at home as I don't like giving antibiotics etc but it's been 3 weeks now and the cough has lingered.
I took him to the doctor after the second week as he complained his ears were hurting and she prescribed anti-biotics which he finished taking 2 days ago, but he's still coughing.
He's not "ill"...still playing and happy, sleeping, eating etc but his chesty cough comes and goes.
Also mabey relevant to say he just started pre-school and developed this cough literally the first week he was there. (he's never been in any other day care so I kind of expected him to get ill first time in a child setting, just not for this long)
My question is has anybody else experienced this with their kids?
Does anyone have any good home remedies?
Or do you think I should take him back to the docs? (only reason I'm reluctant with this option is because we've already been and we live in a country where antibiotics are handed out like sweets and since we've already tried antibiotics I don't see how that would help)
Any advice would be most helpful please,

Try rubbing vicks vapor rub on the bottom of his feet and then putting socks on, this is especially helpful at night. Also eucalyptus oil, you could put a few drops in a hot bath and let him breath in the steam, that should help clear up the congestion.
