High school student/son has checked out on studying!

My son is refusing to do homework, or when he does decide he needs to do it, it is turned in late or incomplete. He refuses to review or study for tests and quizzes.
His grades are falling and no matter how we approach him regarding this he just tells us to "back off" and that he "has it under control. Should there be consequences at home or just let his bad grades be consequence enough?

Welcome to the world of HS.

Pretty common story. In short, yes, you need to be enforcing consequences with him, whether or not he thinks you should back off. Once great one is to sit and do homework with him. I've spent the last few nights watching algebra be completed. Tonight is Chemistry.

Found that the problem with my son was a combo of socialization...gotta socialize ya know, lack of motivation after teachers spoke down to him, and in general a lack of knowing what he really wants to do with his life.

So, we now do homework together (rather, he does it, i check it, just like in elementary), and have a lot more one on one time with each parent. Seems to be working, the grades are starting to come up.

Find his currency. Phone, computer, whatever, and restrict access. Contemplate the joint homework idea.

Good luck
