currently i have a 14mth old little girl and am 31wks pregnant with my second...i do currently work part time about 20hrs a week...we have been very lucky that our parents and close family have watched our daughter while im at work without any comenstation....i feel that its a lot of work to put on them with 2 so i am considering starting a daycare out of my home...if that is the decision i make i have a room that i would make 100% child proof and my 2 dogs would not be aloud in, we also have a VERY large backyard for the kids to run around in...we can not afford for me not to bring in any income...i have 1 current co-worker that pays alot in daycare and have considered talking to her about watching her son for almost half of what she currently pays...my ? to you is what are your thoughts on home daycare? what would your concerns be? and would you prefer a home daycare or a regular daycare facility?

I was considering that. Not sure where you live but in Canada the YMCA has a program called 'good beginnings'. It's really cheap to take and walks you through the process of becoming licensed as a family facility. I opted not to do it as there are restrictions as to how many kids you can take and with all of my own little ones included in those numbers I wouldn't be able to make much money. I prefer family based facilities and if you have a passion for it, it can be great! There are other ideas out there too for making money from home like transcription. Wish you the best.

Our 2.5 year old son goes to an in home day care and he loves it and so do I! I love that there are only 8 kids total, they are in a large child proof room, there is a big fenced in yard for them to play in. She cooks healthy homemade meals for them daily and there is structure as far as the program goes. Our day care provider is AMAZING to say the least. I would choose an in home day care over a childcare facility any day! Good luck to you :)

Hey!! I feel like I'm in your same boat. I have an 11-month old and am moving to new city. I want to have some income since I haven't been since my son was born but I really don't want to leave him. So, my solution is the same as yours, start your own daycare. I personally would rather put my kid in a home daycare than a facility because you get more one-on-on attention. They are typically smaller and you get to know the person who cares for your child so much better.
I also love the idea of a home daycare because you get to be home with your kids. You get to set your own schedule and many things can then be deducted for taxes that you already use, like part of your mortgage!! You can also get meal reimbursements through the state, even for your own kids. Several of my friends do this and they seem to love it.
Some down sides to consider though is that you are always with kids, all day every day. You don't have the freedom to leave and do what you want. If you are licensed by the state, then you need to make sure you meet those standards. Several parents will try to bring their kids to daycare sick and try to mask it with tylenol or whatever. I googled running a daycare and found a site that offered a program to help you start your own daycare.
There is a lot to consider, such as having a handbook for caring for sick kids, when you close, your policies, how much to charge etc. Remember that you are running a business and people can try to take advantage of you.

Let me know if you have any more questions!!
