By all of you telling me that it's a relaxed and comfortable experience has me wanting to pursue it! I've had 2 children in the hospital, but in a different Province then I'm in now. I haven't always heard the nicest things about the hospital here, so the home birth thing is looking really good! :) I don't really have any specific questions, just wondering what it was like for you ladies. Sounds much better then sitting at the hospital and not really being listened to.

Hi Anneke,

What do you want to know, specifically? I have had all five of my kids at home - so perhaps I can answer a few questions. I don't know how it compares to a hospital birth, since I never went that route. I do know it was very relaxed and comfortable, with friends and family there. And the midwives always cooked for me afterwards - boy, labor can really make you hungry!

Be sure to find a good midwife. Find out as much as you can. Be prepared and willing to transfer to a hospital at the first sign of trouble. When you think you can't take anymore pain, that's as bad as it will get, and you'll do it. Good luck. I have six children and three were home births. It is a fantastic experience.

I have had three home births, one unplanned and the other two planned. I cannot recommend it enough. Its amazing to give birth at home, and be able to climb into your own bed afterwards with your baby and family. My daughter was present at two of the births, and she loved it, she is nine now and my last son was born in May. It is a really ampowering feeling. If you have the opportunity, then go for it. Good luck on whatever you decide. One tip, get yourself a showercurtain for the birth, that way it can be placed wherever you plan to give birth, and there is no mess on the carpets. lol. xx

I had a home birth in May and it was amazing! I had planned to deliver with my midwife at the hospital, but the baby came so fast I couldn't get there and ended up having him right on my bed! My midwife arrived just minutes before he was born, and he is healthy, happy, and has never been to a hospital. If I had a doctor, I probably would have had to deliver the baby myself, as the firemen who arrived didn't have a clue what to do. I believe it was a miracle, and so empowering and spiritual. Midwives are highly competent and well trained to know what to do and if you need to go to the hospital...etc. Good luck!

I had a home birth in February and it was the most AMAZING and empowering experience of my life!!!!! I would recommend it to anyone :) They have also proven home births to be easier & faster due to the comfortable environment. They also say that homebirths result in a lot less complications due to interventions ie: pain meds, inducing labour etc.

Good luck and best wishes whatever your choice :)

I had a home birth. It was an amazing experience and it was great to be in the comfort of my own home. I agree with Anne get a midwife that you are comfortable with and trust. I was able to have a natural unmediated birth which was what I wanted. I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. My husband was able to catch her and I was able to hold her within seconds of her arrival. The only people to touch her within the first hr of her birth was her parents.
If you want more information I would also recommend going to www.mybestbirth.com they are very much pro-homebirth. Best Luck and I hope you have the birth experience you want!

Hi Anneke,

I had a home birth and had a wonderful experience. Just be sure and find a midwife who you are comfortable with and confident in. For lots of discussion about homebirth I recommend the forums at mothering.com - you can hear a lot of moms' experience there. Best of luck.
