How are some ways you deal with an impulsive four year old boy?

My son just turned four in June. He is highly social, and has a dynamic personality. He can also be somewhat aggressive at times and impulsive. This has caused (on rare occasions) him to get hurt and/ or other children. He is NOT mean spirited, he does not do things to purposefully harm others. It is his impulsiveness and his desire to always be center of attention that get him into these situations. Any suggestions on what I do about this??

A powerful horse under the control of a trainer is a beautiful and useful thing. Sometimes the will does need to be broken, and then re-shaped into a more appropriate behavior. My son was a busy one as well. I finally explained to him that I just couldn't not allow him to hurt people or break things- even on accident. If he hurt a friend, the friend went home after an apology to the friend and his parent. If he broke something, even his own toys (because in reality, everything in the house is MY property) then his fave toys were taken away. I explained that since he had a hard time controlling himself, I would be glad to help him, by removing people and objects from him until her was old enough to control himself. Truthfully, 5 years old was the worst year, but after that, and my consistent "helicoptering" (watching him very closely) he improved greatly!

That's a tough one, because you don't want to quash his spirit, but you still want him to at least have SOME forethought before he asks.

Part of it is out of your control, where he's young and naturally impulsive. He WILL most likely be more prudent as he gets older. As far as what to do, all I can think of is to maybe make a big show of yourself stopping and thinking before doing something. Perhaps if you do this often enough, he'll start doing it too?
