How do I get my 3 year old to listen?

My son is 3 years old and he is seriously hard headed. He will not listen and throws horrific tantrums I have tried everything from spanking to time out. What else can I do because none of those things are working. He talks back constantly and if he doesn't get his way he throws himself on the floor and screams. I will not and can NOT tolerate this behavior any longer. His father intervenes when he can, ( his father and I are separated). Please help!

Tantrums are very normal at 3. Many kids will get over them w/ age and maturity if you just ignore the fit and go about your business. Some kids can not settle down unless you intervene and offer comfort. Spanking oftentimes makes a child's behavior worse, so I'd stop that immediately.

While time out can help in some situations... at this age ignoring things like back talk and fits and redirecting him to appropriate behaviors is generally more effective.

A lot of calm patience is necessary to survive a 3 year old. In over 20 years of child care and almost 15 years as a mom... 3 is generally the worst age I have ever dealt with. Hang in there!
