If he has his own potty try keeping it near him at all times if you haven't been already. If it's warm enough, try keeping him naked below the waist when at home. I had to do this with my 3 year old in order to get him to recognize he had to go and go on the potty by himself. He is now four and almost never has any accidents. If he is excited to go to school eventually, tell him he needs to be trained in order to be able to go. That also worked with my son. Good luck.

Start training on a Monday and do not use nappies again during the day. Take him to the toilet ever half an hour until he pees and then wait an hour and take him again ever half an hour. Reward him with lots of praise if he manages to get something in the toilet or make a sticker chart. The first three days will be the worst so be prepared with lots of spare clothes and carpet cleaner. After three days you should start to see more control from him and accidents should become less frequent. At the age of three it should really only take about 2 weeks to crack this for him to be in control completly. Do not revert to nappies at all so make sure that you can be at home for two weeks to give him every chance. I put both of my boys onto the toilet with a seat and a step and they never had a potty. Just chat to him so he does not feel pressured and you should have success. Good luck!
