How do I get my almost 2 year old son to feed himself with a spoon?

My son will be 2 in a few weeks. He is a picky eater but when he does eat, he wants me to feed him. At around 18 months or so he would feed himself using a spoon, but my parents and in-laws fed him and then he stopped using a spoon. I have been trying very hard to get him to use a spoon when he does decide to eat. Does anyone else have this issue?

Just don't feed him anymore. Sit down at the table with him when he eats and have something for yourself, and everyone eats on their own. Praise him for being a big boy. He should be capable of using a spoon by now and is probably just being stubborn about it. It may take awhile of letting him use his hands to get back to the spoon. And maybe giving him a "fun" spoon (colored or fun shaped) might help too. But mostly you just have to refuse to feed him anymore and he'll learn. My 2-year-old does just fine with a spoon...but he's not my only child so I don't have time to feed them all! (Other is older and occasionally "regresses" and begs me to feed her, dress her, etc. but I just give her a hug and tell her she's a big girl and can do it herself.)

I'd just hand him the spoon and tell him he's a big boy and can do it himself. Stop feeding him yourself. Give him the food and let him do it. If he's hungry enough he'll eat.

No. But just keep giving him the spoon. Encourage him to eat with it. Tell him if he does he can go somewhere special, like maybe the park, or the library....
