how do I get my toddler to potty train and stay interested

My wonderfully independent toddler has been very good and has excelled in a lot of other things but the one thing that he seems to do off and on is potty train. We have tried cheering, creating a song and dance when he does go, given rewards but then he just stops and refuses to do it until about a week or two later. He will do it again. The accidents are going up up and up. Please help!

If he's just not interested, keeping him in a diaper or pull up will eliminate the accidents. Bodily functions is one of the few things toddlers have completely w/in their control, so quite a few kids use that to exhort their 'power' when they may otherwise feel powerless. Taking the pressure off the entire situation and offering casual encouragement (but not making much 'noise' about it either way) can oftentimes get a kid who is otherwise ready to train themselves. Or... he might just not be ready.

I let my son potty train himself and in 13 years as a parent I think it was the smartest, most effective thing 'I' have done. ;)
