How do I help my 13 year old daughter cope with her depression?

My ex-husband recently went into rehab for help since he is an alcoholic, and my 13 year old daughter is miserable. She won't speak to anybody, not even her best friends. She's shutting everybody out and when I asked her about how she felt, she just said "I'm not surprised, he's a hopeless d***" Help please!

Have you sought counselling for her? Have you talked to her school? There may be a teacher she really feels comfortable with and is likely to open up to.

As a teacher myself, I will say that many of our students who are doing it tough at home (which is the case with your daughter) will be more likely to open up to a teacher. I personally have had students open up about suicidal thoughts and been able to convince them to talk to someone (and have had to report it too). So it is worth having a talk to the school about what is happening at home, because often they can pick up on things that you don't.

And let's face it, your daughter has every right to be angry at her father at the moment. She really needs professional help too.
