How do I stop my son From Grinding his teeth?

My 3 years old son is constantly grinding his teeth very hard. And I have no clue how to get him to stop before he causes major damage. At first we just told him not to do it and that he needed to stop. Then we told him that he was hurting his teeth. Then we told him that if he kept doing it that he was gonna loose his teeth and look like his tooth less Great Grandma whom scares him because she has no teeth. I know that he understands that we don't want him doing it and that he understands what it is that we don't want him doing. I am looking for ideas of any kind. I am at a complete loss of what to do. I don't want him causeing major damage to his teeth and jaw at such a young age. I would like to get it stoped long before he gets his Adult teeth so he does not wreck them. Please Help. Thanks Anna

He's doing this while awake, I would assume? I would say that the first step would be to take him to the dentist. They can fit him for a bite plate that he can wear while sleeping, and would probably have some good advice on how to manage his daytime bruxism.
