The pediatric dental nurse at our health clinic told me that when they don't have teeth you need to wipe down their gums with a soft damp cloth and then as soon as they get teeth you need to start brushing their teeth. She said that they won't really get the hang of doing it themselves until they are 4 or 5 but that if you start brushing early they get the idea that it is something they should do.

We've been brushing both our girls teeth after every meal and before bedtime since they started getting teeth. They are now 3 1/2 and 2 years old and I've started doing the routine "here, you try, then let Mama see how well you've done" - that way they are starting to learn how to do it themselves, but I still get to make sure they are totally clean.

My kids are 3 and 4 and still don't brush correctly, I still have to do it for them. I started when they were about 8 months old, probably should have started sooner, though. Maybe at 6 months?

I dont know how you teach them but start as soon as you can. I stand behind my daughter and started brushing her gums before she had teeth so she would get used to it. Dentists say that you should brush kids teeth until they are around 8. I brush her teeth first 'one good brush' then I let her have a go we do this at least two times a day
