With girls, they actually start PMSing about 12 months before their periods start, so it could be that. I get attitude from my 13 year old too, but he's a boy, he doesn't get that bad. If he DOES speak to me like that, I make sure I tell him that I am not going to tolerate that attitude and if he wants me to do things for him (such as take him to a friends house or to his sports games, etc) then he has to treat me with respect. But we use to get the mood swings from my stepdaughter when she was around 11 or 12 just as she hit puberty. It is a phase, she grew out of it. But in the meantime, don't tolerate it.

I think another thing to keep in mind is that when they do reach puberty, they have a greater sense of wanting to be more responsible for themselves rather than being nagged all the time. They like to have a little bit of control in their own lives as well. Being asked about some things may make her feel that you don't trust her to be responsible for it. Perhaps you could try giving her some additional responsibilities and make her feel a little more grown up. But also make her aware that with responsibility comes consequence, so she has to be accepting of that too....I know my son has really shown some great responsibility in the last 12 months or so, and I have started to show more trust in him, which I know he appreciates.

I live with my 10 year old nephew and he behaves in a similar manner. He's very fond of telling me to shut up and calling me a moron or stupid. I warn him once, warn of consequences and request an apology. If it happens a second time he loses electronic privileges like computer or tablet. I have to say it's usually pretty effective.

Have daughter and mother time....get the dvd beaches....sit down and watch it with her.........the next time she smart mouths you ignore for awhile , make her a nice milkshake then sit her down and tell her calmly how she makes you feel.

Talk to her and ask her why she's giving you so much attitude and being so disrespectful to you both. It may be a phase, but you still need to address this with her. There's no reason a child should be talking to her mother like this. Sit down and talk to her. Ask her what's going on to make her speak to you that way and why she thinks it's Ok for her to do so.

Also.. 10 years old.. It's possible she could be getting ready to start her period. Some girls start as early as 9, some as late as 19. Maybe it's a hormone thing? Either way, she doesn't need to be speaking to you in that tone.
