How do you control tantrums?

One of my 3 year old twin girls has horrible tantrums. I would even call them rages. Last night it started after she would not pick up her toys after me asking her a few times. Finally, I put her toys away, and that set her off. She started screaming "I want to do it myself!!" I didn't want to give in to her demand, but after 20 minutes or so of her screaming this over and over, she went downstairs, got the toys back out, and put them back, screaming mad the whole time. I thought she would calm down, but it just escalated from there, and it started to scare her sister. I am at a loss on what to do. I could not do anything to calm her down. I have tried ignoring the behavior but that seems to make her angrier. The last two nights have been really bad. I feel totally helpless and frustrated. Any advice?

Keep ignoring her, she'll figure it out. Whatever you do, stay calm and stick to your guns. I know it can be very frustrating, but it will pass if you refuse to reward the behavior with attention or by allowing her to wrest control through yelling.
