How do you explain to your child that their teacher is leaving the school?

My son has finally found a teacher that he gets along with and he is actually happy to go to school now. We just found out that his teacher is leaving to go to another school next year. My son has made it clear that he is upset by this. He has ADHD and is in a SUCCESS class. This teacher would be his teacher next year as well if he weren't leaving. How do I help my son cope with this?

Fatima- he will be 7 next month.

JuLeah- I'm not using his ADHD as an excuse for anything. Just trying to get the point across that he doesn't respond to everything like other children do. He doesn't do well with change.

Thank you all for your advice and direction.

People come into our lives for a reason or a season. Relationships don't last forever. He can take what he learned and use it next year. He knows now he can like school. It was not just this teacher that made that happen, he played a role too. Never, never used ADHD as an excuse for anything. Have the teacher talk with your son about the skills and tools he has learned that will help him next year. Maybe ask this teacher to keep in touch with your son through letters over the summer and thoughout the next school year.

Address his fears Tell him I know your sad about your teacher leaving but its so exciting for them to get a new job! Just think how much fun you'll have next year getting to know a new teacher! and then come up with come positive things about getting a new teacher!

Just keep positive when talking about it with your son and help him to make a going away gift or card for her. If you keep a positive attitude he should pick up on this and eventually react the same way. Don't use phrases like that is sad, or what a shame, try and use positive statements like isn't she lucky to have a new job, thats nice she can share her niceness with other children aren't they lucky. You get my drift!
