How do you get a 6 yr old to understand that mucking about in class and being the class clown is not doing him any favours in the long term ?

He is 6 and doesn't understand long term. In the short term, which is all he can understand, he gets attention and he gets out of work. Attention and work avoidence are big motivators.

Set up a system where he does not get the reward for the behavior

His teacher ought to be doing this if he/she is at all skilled with kids

You could have a talk with him and ask him why he is acting this way and tell him that it is disruptive to the class and they need quit so they can learn and listen to the teacher. You could also ask him what he wants to be when he grows up, and then tell him that if he wants to be a policeman or fireman or Doctor or teacher or whatever he happens to say, that he need to pay attention to the teacher and work hard so he can accomplish his goals.
