Over the past 3 years, my daugter's sleep has gone something like this: okay, good, bad, good, bad, so-so, good, bad, good. :-) Everytime I think I've solved the problem (teething, separation anxiety, night light, dreams, potty) she comes up with a new one!

My son didn't sleep through until he was 2... Has he reached a developmental milestone recently (like walking), because that can often thrown them off with their sleep. He could also be having a growth spurt.
If it's been going on for a while you may need to reteach him how to sleep. There are lots of methods and information online. Just google no cry sleep methods (I hate cry it out or controlled cryin methods but you could use those if that's something you're comfortable with).
Was he sick when he started not sleeping through? Often a child will get sick and parents will spoil them (bring them into their bed, cuddle them to sleep etc) and that can through their whole sleep routine off.

How much does he nap during the day? Maybe he is sleeping too much throughout the day. Maybe he is teething or going through separation anxiety.

At 13 months my daughter was having two hours sleep after lunch and then going to bed about 8.30 and sleeping until about 7.30-8am. Try putting your baby down at a certain time every day and see if they will self soothe. If you can get into a routine of sleeping it really does help.
