SO has had a BAD cough for like 4 months after a cold that he had. I have been BEGGING him to go to the DR. He kept telling me he would. Never did. What comes in the mail today? FISH ANTIBIOTICS! He plans to take these instead of going to get a diagnosis for why he is coughing so bad. Sorry more of a venting post, but come on, go to the DR! We have health insurance and our RX co-pays are 30 bucks. He said this only cost 12.50, with 15 bucks in shipping. Also our DR co pays are 20 bucks. Better to be safe than sorry, I say! JEEZ!

@ Joy - I agree with Tracey. I do not find the humor in a grown man purchasing fish antibiotics just to avoid going to the doctor. From a medical standpoint there are several things to consider. As people have mentioned, he may have a serious condition that needs to be addressed. The antibiotics may not be the right medication for his condition, or the right concentration, he may not dose himself correctly because he is not under medical supervision. Because fish antibiotics are not for human consumption they are not regulated as carefully so, as someone already mentioned, they may have may additives (or fillers) that are harmful to humans. This harm wouldn't necessarily show up in the fish because they are dosed at a much smaller level. Then you have to consider that the husband may have an allergic reaction to this antibiotic. Some reactions are relatively minor, while some are life-threatening. If he had taken a doctor-prescribed, human approved medication and something horrible happened, his family would have financial recourse against the manufacturer to pay his medical expenses. This way, they don't. If he has an adverse reaction to the fish meds, he's screwed. It's a completely off-label use. This is one reason why self-medicating is completely irresponsible. Now on to the personal aspects of the situation. Yes, it is his body. Technically he can do whatever he wants, it is a free country. But you know what? When he got married he entered into a contract with his wife and part of that was in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish. He is not a bachelor anymore, just looking out for himself. He needs to think about his family. He is responsible for them, and if something happens to him, it happens to them. Financially and emotionally. That goes for all you moms not taking care of yourselves because you "don't have time" because you have 4 kids. Bullpucky! You know what? You'll be a better mom if you take a half-hour for yourself and make sure you are in a good place. You and your kids will be better for it. Don't miss your doctor appointments just because you don't think you have time. If you keep thinking that, time will run out.
*steps off soap box* Sorry about the rant...I just have a pet peeve about people blaming other things for not taking care of themselves. You owe it to your family to stay happy/healthy.

It is funny in a way seeking advice about husbands in Circle of Moms. Do you ladies like to be moms to your husbands? I don't! I hate it. I wanted a husband a partner not a baby adult ...I think you should just let him do whatever he does...it is his health and the only person responsible for it is he himself...I do it until he will get wiser or else. I have a child already and I always wanted only one.

Had similiar problem. Made appointment for my husband, got a sitter, when he walked in the door, I had keys in hand. He threw a fit, so I picked up the phone to call 911. He jumped in the car, and off to the Doctor we went. He actually had a heart problem. He too taking over the counter or mail meds.
Begging, pleading, will not work. YOU have to make it happen. If you know your Doctor well, call them for a hint. I got my hint from my Doctor and it worked. I so pray your husband will go. Ask him for his Physician's license. Bless your heart.

a serious cough over a longer time can mean a major health problem. Someone mentioned lung cancer, could also be pneumonia or other lung/bronchial conditions requiring diagnosis and real treatment.
Fish antibiotics??? Unless they are known to treat a specific bacteria that he has been confirmed to have, they aren't going to do any good and could do harm.
Even if he's deathly afraid of doctors, after 4 months of a serious cough, he's making a big mistake by avoiding them.

Uhm, not to alarm you, but a cough lasting for 4 months can be a sign of lung cancer. He really needs to go to the doctor. :/
