I nursed Dylan til she was three. Instinctively I knew she was ready to stop. I did have to have surgery and she nursed before I went in. She was very respectful and never climbed on me or tried to nurse when I was recovering. I gave her the opportunity to continue after I was healed but she was not interested and that was fine with me. I got pregnant with Ava 2 weeks after she weaned! She was very independent even though she still nursed. She slept in her own room, through the night, went to preschool, spent the night at my parents' a lot, stayed with her daddy when I went to professional conferences for days at a time without any problems. Ava is not so independent. She is just a different kid. She is two and a half and nurses about three times a day. I work full time so she nurses in the morning, after daycare, and before bed. I am fine with the arrangement. I don't think she is ready to stop nursing yet like her sister was.

I nursed both of my kids for 10mo. each. They kinda' helped me decide, they were getting too distracted during feeding. The first month or two was very hard with both of them. It didn't come easy, and I had some issues with my 2nd. But I stuck it out and I'm very glad that I did!! :) Good luck to all that decide to nurse, but DON'T feel bad if you can't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still going strong at almost 6 months. I will BF until I get pregnant again and it is close to my due date. There is no reason you can't BF until they are two or three. We are one of very few countries that stops so early! It is a great bond, good for your body and the baby's development. Why stop! That doesn't mean you cannot supplement with solids (starting around 6 months, on doctors advice) or formula. I like how some of the others mentioned they did both. I also agree straight to cup, skip the bottle if they are not being bottle fed already. Mine is starting to take sips of BM from a cup. Depending on how much I pump. I just started pumping a couple of weeks ago. Took two days for my body to catch up with the extra demand, now it isn't a problem. Just hungrier!

I breast fed my first daughter until she was 18 months. But I was 3 months pregnant and she self weaned herself. Some babies don't like the changing of the milk when you become pregnant and she didn't. When she turned a year I went to only feeding her the morning before her breakfast and then at night before bed. She was okay with it and it was for about 10 minutes or less. With my little one now, she is almost 11 months and still breastfeeding! I plan on also going until 18 months, as long as she seems ready for it!

I have 4 and nursed each until they were about 14 months. When they started trying to "expose" me in public, I decided they were done. They could eat on their own and just wanted comfort or closeness to mom. I started out trying to give them a sippy cup of water when they wanted to nurse then if they still wanted to nurse I would hand them off to Dad with the sippy cup. It only took a week or so and they forgot about it.

We let our son decide when he was ready--at 27 months he declared himself a "big boy" and stopped :)

Number two is almost here so we'll see when he decides he's a "big boy," too!

I breastfeed my daughter til she was 2yrs and 2mth old. I only stopped feeding then because I was 5 months pregnant with my son and my nipples were extremely sensitive. My son is now 8 months old and I plan to feed him until whenever he wants to stop. I feel lucky to be able to breastfeed my babies for so long and have had great support from husband and friends.

I breast feed my son until he was one. I knew it was time to stop when he began to bite. I did not have any trouble weening him either. I just dropped the number of feedings I was giving him, replacing them with real milk, and eventually my supply went dry. He is such an agreeable child that it was not difficult for either of us to stop breast feeding.

I breastfed my son for 6 weeks. Six long, painful, agonizing, miserable weeks. I saw 2 different lactation specialists and every nurse at the health department. My son had a strong suck reflex and would not, no matter how hard we tried to correct it, he would NOT latch properly. To say my nipples were sore is an understatement. They were cracked and bleeding and Lansinoh did nothing for me. Neither did breast pads or ice packs. The reason I went to formula was because one night while I was trying to get him to latch on, he did it so hard that I almost squeezed his little head too hard (he was in the football hold). I was afraid of hurting him by my pain reaction so I asked my husband to go make a bottle. 10 minutes later we were all happy and snuggled in the bed and he was eating like a champ.

I am still breastfeeding my daughter at 16 1/2months. I plan to keep feeding her until she decides she's had enough. She's never had a bottle as she went straight to a doidy cup.

[deleted account]

i dont enjoy Bfeeding a whole lot cuz im a size F, so i only Bfeed till my babies are 9mons. i also go straight to the cup. sippy cup that is.

Bf my son until he weaned hiself at about a year, towards the end he was just feeding before bed. Currently feeding my daughter, now 5 months and plan to let her wean herself when she's ready.

[deleted account]

my first till she was 13 months...i weaned her because of work and i was tired of pumping all the time. my second till 14 mo and he weaned himself, he went from twice a day (before nap and at bedtime) to nothing. just like that, one day he quit and that it was done.

I nursed my first for 15 months and the other two I had to bottle feed.

We just knew it was time for quits and he went strait to cups.  the second and third bottle fed for one year exactly then strait to cups.

I plan on going at least a year, but not sure how much longer after that, we'll see how the little guy feels about it!

Yea I planned about a year, & at that age I only bfed at bed time. Katie, the little guy will just keep going until u stop him, babies love being bfed & its actually quite difficult 2 stop cause u love it aswel, the connection u have, & how u feel more needed, & so much more convenient than bottles!etc.  I must have asked 3 or more different health visitors "how do I stop"? they didn't seem 2 want 2 help me stop, infact 1 of them actually said "oh thats cause we dont want u 2 stop"! wen I was looking thru bfeeding leaflets.....they all help u 2 bfeed & tell u how wonderful it is but they dnt seem 2 mention the stopping part.

I breast feed my daughter for 6months would of done it longer maybe a year but she
took her self off the breast it depends on you and if you are producing enough milk.
My daughter also took the bottle along with breast feeding.

Eight months today! I plan on going at least a year, but not sure how much longer after that, we'll see how the little guy feels about it! I definitely plan on stopping breastfeeding before getting pregnant again, though, as I only want one little one feeding off my body at a time! :)
