We just started foods and the pediatrician said nursing every 3 hours was too much

At 6 months old? Whenever they want.

When my son was 6 months old he would sometimes nurse 2-3 times in ONE hour. He didn't go longer than 4 hours w/out nursing until he was a year and a half.

I don't think your paediatrician knows very much about nursing.

Solids should not cut into the amount of breast milk (or formula) a baby gets. From 6 to 12 months solids are mainly for practise. Breast milk should still be the primary source of nutrition.

Also, babies don't nurse only for nutrition. It's perfectly normal for a baby to want to nurse for comfort - when they are tired or feeling insecure.

Breastfed babies don't over eat either. Frequent nursing, where I don't think every three hours at 6 months is frequent, doesn't mean over eating.

At 6 months, 6 to 8 feeds in 24 hours is average... but not a hard and fast rule.
