how old does your baby have to be to have rice cereal

Forget the books. A book can't raise your child and each is different. My mother gave me and my brother cereal at 2 weeks old. My first daughter was 1 month. My second was 3 months. I never put it in a bottle either, I always used a bowl and spoon. Follow your heart! Good luck! :-)

Here in Canada we are informed to wait till 6 months t used to be 4-6 months but research showwed feeding cereal to early was linked to Diabeties, Obesity, Allergies and Celiacs disease

If you follow most guidelines set up by nutriotionnists and places like Gerber and Heinz you should wait until they are six months old. I started my children earlier (against doctor's advice) but the formula just wasn't satisfying them anymore. Every child is different. Whatever you do DO NOT feed the cereal to your infant through the bottle, there is a serious choking hazard. If you feel your child is ready for cereal prior to six months of age, make sure to only feed him about a tablespoon of cereal and it must be very thin and watery...if your child just lets it dribble out of there mouth or choke when you feed them, then they are not ready. Make sure your child is able to hold their head up on their own before you start feeding them solids. Just for the record, my daugher was three months old and my son was two months old.

your baby really only needs breast milk until 6 months old. Some very hungry babies may need solids sooner (5 months) but 3 months is far too early to start solids as their gut is not ready for it. I dont know what books people are reading but the world heath organisation says 6 months for solids and certainly no books I ever read said 3 (and I read lots).

My daughter was 11 weeks old when i introduced baby rice and was the best thing i ever did. Recommendations are that you start to wean at 6 months but i think whenever you think is best, you know your baby better than anyone.

Take it slowly and make sure that your baby is not getting constipation.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

SIx months is early enough if you are convinced its necessary. Its better though to add extra nursings on to build up your milk supply, instead of filling the baby with cereal before their digestive tracts are ready. If you baby is nursing and sleeping with you, you both will get much more sleep.

most docs will say 6 mos ......It can be linked to many digestion problems, aler etc....if their little tummys are not ready for it yet.....unfortunately there is no way to know for sure until the damage is done!! regardless it is good to consult a doc before just deciding to move ahead and do it ....but for sure not before 3 mos....... I fed my son at 4 mos and his stomach could'nt take it ...caused more problems than it was worth .....wish i would have waited till 6 he is 4 now and we are still dealing with what happened from being fed too early!!! My sugestion is to wait the 6 mos recomended....

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has found that feeding your infant solids before they are six months of age increases the chances of your child developing food allergies. Breast milk and/or formula provides them everything they will need until they are six months old....if its about getting more sleep, and you are breastfeeding....try formula feeding after breast feeding right before bed

heres some info that might effect your decision

what ever you may chose good luck and i hope everything works out for the best for you!!

I started giving my daughter rice cereal in her bottles when she was like two months old maybe sooner than that. I was getting up with her like every 2-3 hours at night and I was exhausted. I started with like a tablespoon or so, and then she slept for longer because she wasn't hungry. Thank god, I am pregnant now and I will do the same again, it didn't hurt her at all and the doctor said it was fine. hope this helps!

I would agree with Michelle. American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 6 months but a lot of doctor's say between 4 and 6 months. I started my son a little after he turned 5 months because he started waking up really early and not going back to sleep (previously 7 - 7). If you do try the cereal it is not recommended to put it in the bottle. If you put the spoon in the babies mouth and after a few tries is still pushing it out with his tongue then his tongue thrust reflex is not gone. Wait another week and try it again. I hope this was helpful. In the end do what you think is best for your child because every baby is different.

You can start cereal between four and six months. It is a matter of preference when you start. It is recommended that you not put in the bottle. Teach your child to take it from a spoon as he/she will start doing w/ 1st foods soon enough anyhow.

My doctor said my oldest daughter was ready at 4 months but I didn't feel comfortable til 6 months. He said my youngest was ready at 6 months (he had changed his position based on the AAP's recommendation for infants to be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months. I started her at 7 months.

Your best bet is to give it a shot around 3 months, as the label on the box says most babies will reject it because of the texture. As one mom wrote, 3 months is what all the books say and my Pedi said the same thing. My daughter loved it (after about 2 weeks) Good Luck!
