How to educate a child to swallow ??

My 5.5 year old daughter chews and chews but refuses to swallow. When we insist on her to swallow she gets tensed more and still swallowing becomes a very tough task for her. I think she is scared that food gets choked and she will puke out. But I'm not sure of the exact reason. I and her father however keep on telling her that swallowing is easy, and that she should not have her food for long time as it causes cavities. But she doesn't seem to change. Her school teacher is complaining me that she has a weird problem and asking me to check with her doctor. They are getting irritated with her that she is taking very long time to eat. Some of her friends and cousins are laughing at her that she doesn't know to even eat. Pls give me some suggestions.

Is this a recent behavior or has she done this for a while? Either way she needs to see a doctor right away.

My son had this issue at 3... but only w/ oranges. He would chew and chew and chew, but for some reason he just couldn't eat them unless the slices were cut into small pieces. He didn't have that issue w/ any other food though.

Take her to her doctor and ask for a speech and language specialist to evaluate her; they deal with chewing and swallowing issues as well as speech. If you live in the US you can request a full battery of evaluations to be done thru the public schools.
