How to get my 14 year old teenage stepdaughter to wash!

Not sure how to handle my 14 year old stepdaughters lack of personal hygiene. My step daughter lives with us, and is a very caring young girl, she gets on brilliantly with her younger bothered aged 4, my only problem is that she just won't wash regularly. We have to nag her to take a shower(lucky it his happens once a week), washing of underwear is a trauma, I have to request it numerous times before it appears in washing baskets. Every time I talk to her about it, she withdraws and I'm at a loss to how I can get her to actually take responsibility for her own personal hygiene? Any help would be gratefully appreciated, please don't assume this is normal teenage behaviour, because it isn't there are other issues, but the hygiene one is the one that bothers me.

It IS normal teen age behavior. I was the same way. I did not like to wash my hair, cause it looked better at the time without a couple of days of washing it.

If she is feeling uncomfortable with you handling her dirty underwear (don't ask her, it is quite obvious she is) then teach her how to use the washing machine so she can do it herself. If ther are other issues, maybe talk to her about it. Not in a parental way, in a friend way. Get to the bottom of this.
