I just started my 4 month old on rice cereal per the pediatrician. The first night I gave her a formula with rice starch in it and tonight I mixed regular formula with rice cereal and both times she was really fussy at night, like hysterically crying. She's not constipated and she still gets up every few hours. Any suggestions?

perhaps it is too thick? I always started with just a LITTLE bit, making it BARELY any thicker than the formual, and only start off with 2 tbs of the mixture... then give her a bottle after she is frusturated (because that happens fast, since they are not used to it

Sounds like she's telling you she's not ready for it. I'd stop for a couple of months. When you do start solids... they don't NEED cereal. Starting w/ a fruit or veggie is better. ;)

It sounds like maybe it is not agreeing with her, and her tummy may not be ready for solids. In general, babies tummies aren't ready for anything other than breastmilk or formula until around 6 months old (although every child is different). She may just not be ready. I have to question why it was recommended to you in the first place too. Was it just because 4 months is what your pediatrician recommends, or was it because of some sort of signs in your daughter that indicated she was ready? I'd stop giving it to her as well.

Why did he suggest it to begin with? Personally I would stop if its causing problems and wait a couple months, it could just be her tummy is not ready. Then in 2 months I would skip rice cereal and do a veggie or fruit.
