okay all you mom's I need some advice! Lily's really congested and has a harder time to breathe at night. Is there any SAFE way to help her out. I have elevated the head of her crib matress and put a humidifier next to her a night, any suggestions would be helpful.

Hey Tara! Listen to the advice about the nasal saline. It's really gross and Lily will hate it, but it really does work. Vicks sells a product that you can put in the humidifier that puts menthol in the air too, which will help, and they also make a chest rub with lavender and chamomile that really helps. My pediatrician also told me that I could give Mac half a dose of children's benedryl when he gets really stuffy, and that honestly works the best, but I would check with Lily's doctor before you did that. Also, baby motrin will help with inflamed sinuses!

How old is she? Baby vics works well and I think they can use it from 3 mos and up. We also use Little Noses Saline Spray. You spray a little up each nostril and then let it sit for a couple minutes. (Normally I'll spray and then change his diaper or clothes while we wait.) Then your use your bulb syringe to suck everything out. One mom shared with me proper suctioning technique and it helped a lot- hold one nostril closed while you suction the other aiming for down into the inner nostril so that it get stuff out of her throat too. It helps a ton. You could also try letting her sleep in her carrier or swing if just mattress elevation doesn't work. Hope it helps.

I used to put some vicks on the chest and behind on the back (where the lungs are - you know where the Doc listens to your breathing). It helps a bit.
In the UK we have a product similar to vicks that is liquid and you can put some drops in a bowl of hot water - creates vapours in her BR. I used to do that 15min before putting her to bed... it helped as well.

Hi Tara, colds can be really hard on little ones, especially since there arent any medications that can really help.

So far you are doing a couple great things, elevating her head to help with drainage and using a humidifier. I would also suggest encouraging her to drink water or watered down juice if she won't drink water. That will help thin out the mucus making it easier for her to cough it up or drain it. I would also recommend getting some nasal saline. Little Noses has both a drip saline and a saline spray. Either one is good to again, thin out the mucus making it easier to get rid of. Use a nasal asperator to help suck the mucus out of her nose and keep her passages clear.

Good luck, I hope your little one is feeling better soon!

run a steamy shower and take her in the bathroom with the door closed for a few mins and just hold her in the room for a few mins
