Is a natural birth as painful as it looks?

I have had 3 completely different labours.
My first was 10.5 hours and ended with a vacuum extraction. I only had a shot of Pthadine about 5 hours before he was born so that had worn off. Yes it was painful but worth it.
My 2nd I was induced and from the first contraction till he was born was only 50mins so didn't have time for pain relief. He was also smaller than my first.
My 3rd I started labour naturally and stayed at home as long as I could. By the time I got to hospital I was already 4cm. They wouldn't give me much just in case it was another short labour so just had the gas and 2 hours after I got to the hospital she was born.

It's different for every woman, and honestly, it's different with each labor. Mine hurt like hell and I had back labor which really hurt. My aunt said once that labor and pushing was like being a little bit constipated - more annoying than anything else - so obviously her labor wasn't painful for her.

It's like some women have super long labor and others don't - again, that can change with each child - my first girl I was in labor off and on for several days, then in hard labor for about 15 hours before she was delivered - with my 2nd girl it was 6 hours from the time I felt the first contraction to the time she was born.

My best advice is to go into it with an open mind - if you need pain relief, don't be afraid to ask for it, and if you don't then more power to you.

My entire labor and hard labor was a piece of cake. i was hardly in pain. gift from god i guess. i had no drugs. and was pretty much silent.but as mentioned its different for everybody. if you really focus on breathing that helps instead of getting in a panicky state of mind.and getting yourself more upset.
