so i had my baby 14 weeks ago and i am exclusively breastfeeding her meaning no bottles or pacifiers. I am having my period i think and its very very heavy and has been going on for the past 10 days. i had an ultrasound done when i was 6 weeks post postpartum and they said everything looked really good. so why is it this heavy and going on for this long. i also thought that when exclusively breastfeeding periods are postponed for some time.

"In theory" EBFing is supposed to stop your cycle as nature's way of spacing out pregnancies, giving your body time to heal between children. And I know women, and even some doctors, who will adamantly swear by this theory, saying if you do it 'right" it's actually an effective form of birth control...but it's simply not the case for everyone. With both of my children I EBFed for the first six months, nursed on demand with short, frequent feedings, and neither of them took a pacifier until after they were 6 months old. Everything "they" say should prevent you from having a cycle if you do it "right", I did. And both times, my period returned right away and as heavy as ever. Although, after my first son was born my entire monthly cycle was longer than normal- 35 days, rather than 28, until I started introducing solids, at which point it went back to my normal 28 days, I assume because I wasn't BFing quite as much. And thus is the story of my surprise-pregnancy with my second child when my cycle unexpectedly changed as I introduced solids. :) But all that is to say, I DID have a regular, heavy monthly cycle while still EBFing and feeding on demand. As for how long you are bleeding, what's normal is different for different people, and I've heard countless women talk about how what was "normal" for them changed after having babies. But if you feel like something is not right, you should always consult your OB.

My periods never stopped when I was breastfeeding, everyone is different. I was tested for all sorts of things after I had my 2nd as I bled for 4 months! We figured out that my body KEEPS bleeding while breastfeeding instead of stopping. I only managed to breastfeed for 5 weeks with my 1st so it was picked up with him.

Something that is normal for you won't be normal for someone else.
