Is it normal to not see a heart beat at 5 weeks and 6 days on a ultrasound?

I had an ultrasound the other day to find out dates, and the ultrasound tech couldn't see a heartbeat she said this is normal at such an early gestation but I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and had everything turn out ok, I have another ultrasound in 2 weeks so for now I have to just wait.

But When The Girl Was Checking My Baby She Couldn't Find The Heartbeat And Ahe Said Maybe I Was Experiencing A Miscarriage Or I Was Not 7 Weeks. She Checked And It Said I Was Actually 5 Weeks. Well, when I was that far along my nurse-midwife couldn't detect a heartbeat with the doppler, but they did an u/s a few days later and they detected a heartbeat. It's pretty common, so I wouldn't worry too much. In some cases it's b/c the mother isn't as far along as they originally predicted and in others it's b/c the heartbeat isn't strong enough to be picked up by the machine. Don't stress, I'm sure everything is going to be fine. Good luck! And congratulations!

With my daughter I had to have vaginal ultrsounds until I was about 9 weeks becasue they couldn't detect a heartbeat with an abdominal ultrsound. With my son I was in a car accident right after I found out I was pregnant and when I went to the hospital they told me that I was 7 weeks and I was either losing the baby or it was an ectopic pregnancy b/c there was no heartbeat. I started grieving the loss right then. When I went to my doctor 3 days later to get examined and schdule a DNC there was a heartbeat clear as day. I was only 5 weeks pregnant and that was why they couldn't detect the heartbeat.

Same for me.. at 6 wks my OB couldn't detect a hb yet via ultrasound, we did a follow up appt at 8 wk to verify heart tones and sure enough everything was normal. Good Luck

I went in at five weeks as well and they could not find a heart beat. I went in a week later and everything was fine. I wouldn't get too worried about it yet!

You shouldn't worry. The very earliest you can hear the heartbeat, is 6weeks. My daughter just had an ultrasound she measured 6 weeks exactly. They couldn't see the heartbeat. They didn't say she was having a miscarriage, they just said it's possible that it's just too early. So don't stress mama. I'll be praying for everything to be ok! ((Hugs)))

I went in at 5 weeks and 4 days and heard it... it isn't exact science as to how far along some one is. Chances are if you had the ultrasound a few days later you would have heard it.

Take a deep breath. He or she is fine Mom. If there was any doubt what so ever, you would certainly have never left the office. I would however next time you are troubled or confused about ANYTHING, stop and request the DR. to come and speak with you.

I was 5 weeks pregnant when I figured it out the first time. They weren't able to hear the heartbeat. Second time around, I knew the night I missed my period that I was pregnant. We were able to get a heartbeat at 5weeks. The doctor was quite surprised. He shouldn't have been. That boy was wild! Felt like he was sliding from one side of to the other!! Even was so anxious that he was born 5 weeks early. LOL Try to stay calm. My first pregnancy was a breeze. She had the hiccups more than she moved. Her brother was the wild child!

Can't help you... didn't have my first ultrasound with either child until 20 weeks

I had my ultrasound today and everything was fine, the baby was there and heart beat was perfect and I am 9 weeks and 2 days :)

One of the first things to develop is the heart. I found this out at 5 weeks gestation a few yrs ago and had experienced a miscarriage. I am just being honest. DEMAND another ultrasound NOW, with the DR present. You have a right to this.

yea had the same issue, they rescheduled for i think 9 weeks cuz i had found out so early with the second and he was alert and well! God Bless im sure its all good

Thanks for all the advice ladies and the reason I went so early was because I have pcos so don't have regular periods so I had no idea how far along I would have been, if I had of had any idea that I was less then 6 weeks then I wouldn't have bothered going to have a scan at all. It does make me feel better to hear from you mums who have had early scans with no heart beat and everything turned out to be normal.

We don't do ultrasounds that early. We usually if it is a normal pregnancy have 1 and that is at 20wks. That is it.

Very normal. heartbeat starts at what 24 days, but we are talking about something that is the size of a grain of sand. we couldn't see our little ones heart beat either at 6 weeks, we didn't see it til almost 8 weeks.

My OB refuses to do dating scans before 6 weeks because he says everything it just way too small to detect before then. I know the waiting is a killer but I'm sure everything will turn out ok.

Yes, it's pretty normal. You're not very far along at all so the heart may not be fully developed/strong enough to be heard (seen) on an ultrasound.
